Plastic Recycling and Conservation

Turning plastic waste into opportunity and inspiring communities to protect their environment.

In rural Tanzania, plastic waste is a major issue, with bags and bottles clogging rivers, polluting the land, and releasing toxic fumes when burned. This harms the environment and communities. At Age Watch Tanzania, we're rethinking waste management as an opportunity for growth and change.

Turning Plastic Waste into Opportunity

Each month, our team collects up to 800 kilograms of plastic waste, which is sent to a recycling plant in Moshi. This initiative creates lasting positive change, encouraging residents to bring their plastic to Age Watch Tanzania in exchange for payment, turning a community issue into a source of income.

Additionally, Age Watch Tanzania currently employs four young men to collect the plastic in nearby villages, but transportation to the recycling centre is costly and complex. To address this, we’re working to acquire a machine that chops the plastic into smaller pieces, reducing costs and improving efficiency, enabling us to recycle more plastic sustainably.

Inspiring Change Through Education

Raising conservation awareness is key to lasting change. Our founder and volunteers lead school lectures and activities to teach children about environmental protection. We collect plastic waste, visit the river, and share stories on preserving nature.

One powerful story is how "the forest sings songs." Children learn that cutting down trees without replanting silences the forest, while planting trees restores its song. This message fosters responsibility for their natural surroundings.

Our program currently operates in one school, with plans to expand to all 10 local primary schools. To do so, we need funding and volunteers to support and train more children. Empowering the next generation will build a community that values and protects the environment for years to come.
